Session A (November 7th & November 14th)

“Not Your Typical Art Class”
Installation and stencil making

Instructors:
Liz Jett, Megan Varnell, & Rachel Villorente

Are you tired of using traditional art materials to express your inner activist? You won’t find crayons and markers in this classroom.  Street artists, like Banksy and Margaret Kilgallen, don’t use traditional methods to promote their causes either.
By using materials like spray paint and stencils, street artists leave their marks all over the city to make a personal statement.  Become an activist to your own cause by leaving your mark on a cityscape we’ll create together.  Saturday morning protest begins November 7th.
The Battle Against the Trashacons!
Sculpture in T.R.A.S.H.

Instructors:
Heather Adams, Whitney Chambers, & Brandan Smith

Transform
Recyclable plastic materials into
Art and help
Save
Humanity

Trash is overwhelming our world!  This build up of scum is disgusting!  The stench is unbearable!  Monsters are springing up from mounds of trash!  We must do something before they take over the entire world. Help us create sculpture like Aurora Robson to transform and battle the dreaded trashacons!

Come Together: Make it Happen!
Mural, found object sculpture

Instructors:
Jessica Kovalcik & Elizabeth Jones

Did you know that each of us throws away an average of more than 1,200 pounds of trash per year! How can I make a difference? Sometimes we can get more done with some help than by ourselves.

In this class we will see what it is like to work as a team to solve a problem while creating something meaningful. We will look at art by Vik Muniz, an artist that works with a team of people to create large works of art out of everyday trash.

Individually we will recycle materials to create pieces of art and as a team, we will work together to turn them into a mural about our community. We will also learn about other artist and organizations that focus on working together to get big things done. We need your uniqueness to contribute to our group effort. Let’s make it happen!

Session B (November 14th & November 21st)

TRASH TALK
installations and mural with found objects

Instructors:
Sarah Askew & Lauren Early

What we consume says a lot about us. What we do with the leftovers says it even louder. It’s time we had a conversation about recycling!

Because actions speak louder than words, let’s have some fun and make art while we’re at it!

We will explore the installation sculptures of Michelle Stitzlein. As we learn about the concerns facing Virginia, and the country’s growing waste management issues, we will be making our own installation sculptures out of these “problem” items. From bottle caps to discarded silverware, we’ve got it all! Come help make a difference and do some trash talking with us!
(Feel free to bring any recyclable found objects or a glue gun to class with you!)

Lights! Camera! Activist!
Fashion Design sewing, printmaking

Instructors:
Alison Thurman & Holly Coggin

Calling all Fashion designers for “Art as Activism!” Do you want to design wearable art that stands for something you believe in? Discover how to make a t-shirt, hat, tote bag, or other form of wearable art in this Saturday Morning Art Class.

We will look towards activist fashion designers Vivienne Westwood, Kenneth Cole, and Marc Jacobs for inspiration. Just bring in one of these items (a t-shirt, hat or tote bag) and we’ll supply the rest! With printmaking strategies, you will embellish your wearable art with a linoleum cut stamp that you will create. You will also have the opportunity to embellish your wearable art with other items we will bring in, such as tape, buttons, ribbon, trinkets, and paint.

Feel free to bring in items to add to your artwork. Not only will we be making these unique clothing items, but we will also be strutting down the runway wearing them the evening of your art show!

“Vigilante Avengers”
Self Portraits, found object collage murals and installation

Instructors:
Diana Heath & Jamie Armstrong

“BOOM!” “SMACK!” “SCREEEEEECH!”  And the Vigilante Van is on the move, escaping into the night full speed ahead.  We are a league of advocates for peace and devoted to justice.  We must take a stand!
We are looking for Avengers to conduct “Shout it Out” missions.  But, for your safety, we need you to develop an imitation of yourself… a phony… a bogus… a sham… Bring out the hero inside to cast as your secret identity so the public can hear you but won’t recognize you.  Inspired by the visionaries Kara Walker, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, you will be making an exact scale replica of yourself (aka your secret identity) that will visually represent and communicate your protests!
Do you have what it takes to join our league for peace?  Do you wish to take a stand!

Once you have chosen your top 2 choices, go to the top of this page and click the “register” button.

Art Education Students participating in ARTS 406 will be leading fun, creative classes involving a variety of art media The Art Education area of Old Dominion University requests your help in informing your students of the Saturday Art Workshops.

Our classes are taught by juniors and seniors seeking certification in art education, under the supervision of certified staff.
