Alumni Art Education Student Morgan Knight Awarded teacher of the Year Award for Corporate Landing Elementary

The ODU Art Education program is pleased to announce that Morgan Knight, ODU Art Education Alumni was Awarded Teacher of the Year for Corporate Landing Elementary.

The ODU Art Education students invite the public to the exhibition of the SMAC student work Saturday December 1^st at the Chrysler Museum from 1:00- 3:00 in the Education Workshop The admission is free.

This past November Art Education students developed and taught the Annual Saturday Morning Art Classes for grades 5-8 at the Chrysler Museum. Anne Corso, the Art Education Director for the Chrysler and Richard Nickel the ODU Art Education Director coordinated this new unique partnership.  The Saturday Morning Art Classes are free to the public and offered every fall semester.

The Saturday Morning art students explored the Chrysler Museum and then created artwork based on a common theme- PUSH/PLAY.  Students made their own sound suit , a costume sculpture modeled after Nick Cave’s Sound suits, created “Day of the Dead” skull piñatas, hand painted a mural based on the theme of “Night at the Museum“ and the installation Diamond Dust, by Judith Braun,kinetic artwork based on AlexanderCalder andPinaree Sanpitak. The Art Education students taught five classes for over 60 students.  The Art Education students also collected food, sheets and children’s clothing and books for the Dwelling Place.

Summer Art Enrichment Program

The Art Education program at Old Dominion University is offering the ODU Summer Art Enrichment Program for children rising into grades 1-8. Classes are divided by age groups. Camp activities include experiences in a variety of art media such as: drawing, painting, sculpture, clay, fibers, printmaking, digital art, and on campus field trips.

Brandon Burdick teaches a student at the ODU Saturday Morning Art Classes

Brandon Burdick has been a Portsmouth Public School Art teacher since graduating in 2007 from the ODU Art Education Program. This year he was awarded Teacher of the year at Douglass Park Elementary School.

Out of over 60 staff members, 5 of the teachers were nominated as candidates for teacher of the year. Brandon authored a paper on pedagogy and his ideas and creative teaching practices pushed him to the top.

His nomination will now be forwarded to the district level, where they will select the elementary teacher of the year for Portsmouth, then the teacher of the year of Portsmouth, then the state.

 Brandon explains his award winning ideas:

“By utilizing humor, passion and trust, coupled with breaking down information to the simplest parts and cross-curricular knowledge, I have created an effective and safe learning environment, not to mention a place where students’ can enjoy expressing themselves.”

Brandon Burdick as featured on a local news channel 10  in 2008 for his ability ot organize a school wide art exhibit in Douglas Parks Elementary School.

Mr. Burdick credits the ODU Art Education Program and its Service Learning approach to teaching for preparing him to be an outstanding teacher. Specifically, Mr. Burdick mentionsr the Saturday Morning Art Classes (SMAC), in which ODU Art Education students design and teach area school children every fall:

“SMAC classes were the final preparation before student teaching. They opened my eyes to the necessities of prior planning, organization, and preparation. Without the SMAC classes to open my eyes my student teaching experience would have been a rough transition.”

Webb Center Student Gallery Application : Fall 2011- Spring 2012

The purpose of the Student Gallery is to showcase student work from the ODU Art Department. Faculty and/or students are asked to present proposed dates based on the calendar year. Each show will be exhibited for a maximum of 2 weeks. At the end of the 2 weeks the work should be taken down by the last day of the exhibition.

Art Education program alumnae Elizabeth Tumilty and Sandra Burton have been nominated for the prestigious Norfolk Public Schools’ 2011 Inspiration Awards under the category of Most Outstanding in Art Education. Emily teaches at Dreamkeepers Academy and Sandra at Blair Middle School. Congratulations to both!

Haha no hi  “Mother’s Day Pottery Sale” for the Mothers of Japan

This year the ODU Student Art Gallery will be hosting the Mothers Day Art Sale to benefit the people of Japan. Students from ODU Ceramics classes and Art Education Classes have been making beautiful bowls and cups to donate to the sale.

All proceeds will be sent to the Save the Children Foundation (http://www.savethechildren.org) .

Inspired by contemporary artists, art education can be a transformative experience.

The ODU Art Education Program is hosting classes written by ODU Art Education Students to educate students and the public on the power of transformation through art.  Students will be encouraged to make meaningful connections to contemporary artists and through creative art studio experiences, gain understanding of how artists today can express ideas and personal points of view through the big idea of “Transformation”.

Mr. Gregory Warmack, also known as “Mr. Imagination” is a contemporary, visionary, self-taught artist whose work is an important part of “Collective Wisdom” at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries at Old Dominion University.

Mr. Imagination currently resides in Atlanta Georgia and creates art with metaphor, meaning and wisdom.  He uses recycled materials to create original works of art that are personal, whimsical and powerful.

In addition to the free lecture on campus, the ODU students will work earlier in the week in the public schools as part of their ongoing service-learning. ODU students will work with fourth and fifth graders at the Willard Model School; Norfolk Public School.  The workshops with visiting artist Mr. Gregory Warmack will be linked to Virginia SOLs and based on the concepts of community identity and transformations.

An exhibition of work from the workshops will be hosted by ODU Art Education students at Waterside on the second floor at Bridge Deck across from Mayer Fine Art.  An opening celebration is set for Monday, October 25^th from 4:00-6:00pm; all are welcome to attend this free event.
